Curriculum in Unit 1 and II (Grades I-X)
The curriculum at Rato Bangala nurtures the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of every student. The school collaborates with the prestigious Bank Street School for Children in New York and follows the development-interaction approach.
Classroom lessons and field trips are planned carefully in order to optimize learning in all areas and to ensure that students acquire the skills of inquiry, observation and experimentation. Teachers balance individual and group activities. Teaching at Rato Bangala is integrated: skills learnt in one subject area are reinforced through application in other areas. Classes take advantage of the school's own rich environment as well as of the historic heritage of Patan and the cultural resources of Kathmandu Valley. Interactive, hands on learning is characteristic of the Rato Bangala method. Role plays, simulations, debates and dramas make learning meaningful and real. The curriculum at RatoBangala is stimulating, demanding and appropriately challenging for students.
RatoBangala's curriculum gives priority to character education. Students get opportunities to discuss real-life ethical and social dilemmas. In classroom discussions they learn to negotiate solutions and make choices that are fair to all; then, they exercise their decisions. The school's progress report is a record of not just the academic growth but also the social and emotional growth of students. Each student's development is carefully monitored and evaluated continuously.
The school's library is the nerve center of the school and exposes students to the best of Nepali and English literature. Reading habits are nurtured to create life-long learners. Homework reinforces concepts and techniques taught in class and fosters independent study habits and time-management skills. Projects are flexible and are planned with multiple intelligences in mind.
Two teachers are in charge of each class in Unit 1(Grades I-V). They oversee the growth and development of the whole child as they lead the teaching of Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Character Education, Performing Arts and Library Studies. They are supported by specialist teachers in Computer Studies, Nepali Language, Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, Gym and Martial Arts.
In Grades VI-VIII, the class room teacher teaches the core subjects such as Language Arts, Social Studies and Character Education. The specialist teachers support the teaching of all the remaining subjects. In grades IX and X, the students prepare for the external government mandated SLC and selected IGCSE subjects.
In grades XI and XII, RatoBangala follows the Cambridge International Examination’s GCE A Level curriculum and prepares the students for College. Rato Bangala’s college placement is considered to be among the best in the region.
External Exams
As is required by the government of Nepal, all Rato Bangala students take the SLC examination. Rato Bangala students graduate with the Cambridge GCE A level which is a two year course after the SLC. The school has been an independent University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) centre NP704 since 1997. Rato Bangala's independent CEEB 689010 facilitates communication with educational testing centers and colleges in the United States. RatoBangala is also a testing centre for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT). Rato Bangala's excellent academic results testify to the effectiveness of its student-centered curriculum.
Results of the External Examinations
SLC results have been consistently good through the years. The GCE A level results have been excellent with RBS students getting awards for securing the highest marks in the world and in Nepal every year.
